Shahnaz Husain : The Herbal Beauty Queen
It is important to
have a dream which is the starting point for succeeding in life.
What is even more important is to seize opportunities and take up
challenges. I was only 15 when I was married and by the time I
turned 16, I had become a mother.
That’s when
the mental upheaval began and I began getting bored with the
drudgery of endless routine. I knew in my heart that I had to
fulfill my dreams.
The first
turning point in my life came when my husband was posted in Tehran.
Once there, I decided to study cosmetology, but it was a very
expensive proposition.
So I began
working for the Iran Tribune – writing articles in English on
various issues and under different names. That’s how I could finance
my training at some of the best institutions in the West.
When I
began my training at Rubistein, I was horrified by the damage caused
to women by chemical ingredients in cosmetics. It was then that I
decided to study Ayurveda, which I began to believe was the ideal
alternative to chemical cosmetics.
I inherited
my faith in natural remedies from my family and Ayurveda further
strengthened my belief in nature. I always believed that India has
much to offer the rest of the world by way of her herbal heritage.
It was my
aim to get India on the world beauty map as I felt terrible about
the fact that India was never represented at any world beauty
Congress.
So on my
trips abroad, I tried to crusade the cause of India’s herbal
heritage and managed to represent the country for the first time at
the CIDESCO Beauty Congress. I was even appointed president for the
day’s proceedings and I took the opportunity to focus attention on
the world of Ayurveda.
The world
had already began to view nature with enlightened eyes and my claims
generated much interest. This was another turning point.
Another
important moment was when we entered the international market for
the first time. This was when we participated in the festival of
India in 1980. We were given a counter in the perfumery section of
Selfridges, the famous departmental store in London. Here we were
rubbing shoulders with the biggest international brands.
I held my
own in this daunting venue and let my products speak for themselves.
Our entire consignment sold in three days and we broke the store’s
cosmetic sales records for the year.
I remember
a headline in the Daily around that time which said ‘Herbal Hell
Breaks Loose in Selfridges’. The result of our success was that we
were offered a permanent counter at Selfridges. That too was a
memorable time in my life.
The desire
to excel, a relentless determination and sheer hard work are
essential to convert opportunities into turning points. I have never
believed in destiny as I believe that you can make your own destiny.
You can be what you will yourself to be.
