‘Menswear’ by Lalit and Sunita

Lalit and Sunita Jalan, two
Kolkata-based designers, unveiled their
collection at the Lakme India Fashion Week
(LIFW) 2001. We caught up with the couple on the
eve of their show.
The designer husband-wife duo from
Kolkata presents a perfect photo-op, as they
give finishing touches to put up their
collection at the LIFW 2001.
Lalit and
Sunita are very much keen on exhibiting their
collection here. Their enthusiasm is intact
despite a hectic schedule that involved
transporting all their collection and the
paraphernalia to Mumbai. Lalit Jalan says, “It’s
definitely worth it, and I am sure that the
efforts will pay off. We hope to do a good
business here.”
 “We
were impressed with the show last year and its
outcome hence we decided to participate this
time.”

and Sunita Jalan were invited to take part in
the LIFW 2000. Then they had decided to wait and
preferred to watch how it turned out. Sunita
explains, “We were impressed with the show last
year and its outcome hence we decided to
participate this time.”
Lalit believes
that the LIFW 2001 presents a great opportunity
for designers to go global and exhibit their
collection to a larger audience. He adds, “Even
established international designers like Kenzo
made their way up through such events.”
The renowned Japanese couturier had
asked Lalit Jalan to design his ethnic wardrobe.
“We dressed him up in dhotis and kurtas, and he
loved all of them,” Sunita smiles.
It
took them about four weeks to compile the
menswear collection for the LIFW 2001.
Classified into seven different lines, the
collection promises to be classy, sober and
imperial, with a tinge of techno added to it.
“The final royal wedding and trousseau is going
to be very impressive,” says Sunita.
They have experimented with bottom
variations and the cropped look. Though, Lalit
and Sunita have extensively used jewellery
throughout their designing career, they have
decided against it this time, and let the
silhouette come out. White, beige and browns,
the quintessential colours in any menswear
collection, will also dominate in Lalit and
Sunita’s collection. Other colours on the
pallette will be orange, black, rust and
blue.
The ‘Lalit Jalan’ label is priced
in the range of Rs 2000 to Rs. 30,000. This
includes kurtas, pyjamas, dhotis, salwars and
sherwanis. The duo is keen on tapping the
international market. Lalit says, “We don’t just
want to cater to NRIs but to other foreign
buyers as well.”
Lalit and Sunita prefer
calling their collection simply ‘menswear’. “We
want to call it neither Indian, nor fusion nor
western,” says Sunita. “It’s rather an
international look in an Indian way,” she sums
up.
