Pali
Sachdev of the signature line Monapali, says
that she has tried to make her prêt collection
exclusive as well as cost effective
Pali Sachdev, is one of the sisters who
make up the brand ‘Monapali’. The other half of
the brand is Mona Lamba. Quiet, reticent and
self-effacing, the sisters are considered by
fashion pundits as the 'Silent Contributors' to
the revival of simplicity on the catwalk. Rohit
Khosla, the father of the Indian Fashion
Industry, had applauded their work and remarked
that they were one of the most innovative and
original designers of all times.
They
believe comfort must coexist with style or it
defeats the purpose of clothing. From their 1985
debut, Lamba and Sachdev have become formidable
names in the fashion industry. And getting
fashion the status of an industry is what they
believe in. Says Sachdev, “It is only a matter
of time before the industry gets organised and
is recognised as such. Nothing will happen
overnight. Events like the Lakme India Fashion
Week 2001 will get noticed by the international
buyers and they will make it a point to come
here annually.”
Though Monapali did not
directly benefit much from the LIFW last year,
Sachdev point outs that she got enquiries and
some deals months later. “So not directly, but
indirectly we did gain from the event,” says
Sachdev.
 This
is never done as gold cuts into the fabric so
embroidery has to be done very carefully. I have
made an attempt and I am very happy with it.

| “This
is only the second year of this event so it is
too early to pass judgement on how much it will
benefit the business of fashion,” she adds.
Incidentally, Monapali was one of the first
signature lines to have used vegetable and
mineral dyes, organic compounds derived from the
roots, leaves, bark of plants and even saffron.
This year the collection consists of a Batik
line, which is simple but embellished with
special effects. As it was Lamba and Sachdev
were the ones who revived Kantha, Madhubani,
Warli, Patta Chitrai, tribal motifs and the
Alpana from the realms of oblivion and elevated
it to the status of haute couture culture. So
obviously this Monapali collection too has
Kantha. Instead of the usual colourful threads
used to do this embroidery Sachdev has used gold
thread instead. “This is never done as gold cuts
into the fabric so embroidery has to be done
very carefully. I have made an attempt and I am
very happy with it,” says Sachdev.
Another unusual line is the sandwich
concept, where she has used colourful threads
between two layers of georgette. To hold the
whole thing together the layers have been
embroidered. The third collection is the
handloom and lace line with diamonds on it.
 But
would attracting the retailers take away the
exclusivity of designer garments? No feels
Sachdev. “I won’t say that the retail market is
not exclusive because you have so many designers
all over the world and they are retailing their
clothes. Big names too have retail outlets, just
the price ranges are different, they have the
couture line and then there is the cheaper prêt
line.”
“India is still young. By this I
mean not young in fashion. Fashion has been
there for ages, since time immemorial. When it
comes to this kind of business-oriented event,
we have a lot of catching up to do. I am sure,
retailers and buyers will gradually see the
benefits of attending fashion events and doing
business,” she says, ending on a positive note.
