‘The
LIFW has allowed me a greater visibility.’
“I am romancing with India,” declares
designer Rocky S. He looks relaxed, as his first
solo show in Mumbai is just over. He feels very
much encouraged by the response and the
appreciation he has received during the Lakme
India Fashion Week (LIFW) 2001. His declaration
does not mean that he is now going to create
ghagra cholis with kutchi embroidery. What it
means that he is going to incorporate Indian
fabrics and motifs in his contemporary and at
times wild designs.
He says with a
smile, “I was keen on displaying my creations to
a larger audience. I hadn’t held a show in
Mumbai in the past so I took this opportunity. I
have been working hard for the past two months
to get everything in place. The effort was worth
it. By participating in the LIFW 2001, my work
is bound to get more visibility.”
The
purpose seems to have been served, if one takes
into account the celebrities that attended his
show. Hrithik Roshan, Preity Zinta, Amisha Patel
(whom he has dressed in Gadar), Yash Birla,
Gautam Singhania and other big names from the
glamour and business world were there.
Visibility is something he surely has achieved.
He has been in spotlight since he
designed Hrithik Roshan’s wedding outfit (a
three-layered angarakha in off-white with heavy
work in dull gold all over the outfit, which was
in spun organza and crushed tissue). The LIFW
2001 show has further enhanced his reputation.
He also managed to get people from Selfridges to
come down to attend his show. He informs, “They
will be visiting my stall here at the LIFW. Let
us see what happens next. I am very keen on
selling my clothes at all big retail outlets in
India and elsewhere. London is one city I am
keen on doing business.”

| When
asked whether he would be participating in the
London Fashion Week, Rocky said, “To be there,
one needs a huge backing, as one has to show
through all four seasons. This needs big-time
monetary support.” Rocky is currently designing
clothes for the Indian cricket team. He was
rather skeptical to discuss the contract. He
merely said: “I cannot reveal much, as there are
a lot of rules and regulations, and they (the
authorities) have not yet given the final
approval. The BCCI logo, other sponsors’ logos
have to be there, and only a particular colours
can be used, I have been told.”
According to Rocky, the clothes for
films are based on the characters one is working
on. In this context, he chooses not to sell the
same patterns in his own store. He adds, “I
realise that fans want their stars to wear a
particular dress. The clothes made for the film
are for that character alone. If they are made
available in the store, what individuality would
my customers get?” he asks.
Rocky S on
his star clients: “Hrithik Roshan is finicky and
disciplined. He spurs me on to another level of
creativity. I enjoy designing clothes for him
because he's got the kind of looks and physique
to make him look fabulous in anything.” “Raveena
Tandon is a challenge for any designer.” “Shilpa
Shetty is a dream person to dress.”
