The doctor will check you out and give you his diagnosis. Afterwards he will usually prescribe some sort of drug to help you with your problem. There are several problems with this:
1) Not every diagnosis is correct which is why it is important to get a second or even third opinion if you feel unsure. Even if the doctor is 100% sure he is correct it’s never foolish to be careful. Keep in mind that a doctor makes money when he prescribes you a drug or recommends surgery. This gives many doctors an incentive to recommend products/methods which may actually be unnecessary for you.
2)If you are given a prescription, unless it’s for medication purposes or allergies most of the time the drugs prescribed will not help you but will only “mask” the problems as I said earlier. So the result of such is you will continue to have the problem and keep it under control due to the drugs effect. What ends up happening is that the problem will not disappear but continue to occur. This is not a solution and if not dealt with can worsen in the future.
3)Consider homeopathic or naturopathic doctors if you need a different kind of advice. These doctors specialize in natural ways to help you without the use of drugs or surgery. So if you are able to find a doctor in your area who specializes in this I recommend you consider seeing them if you are worried.
4)Always ask your doctor the cause of your problem. It’s important to note that if a doctor is unable to help you then it’s important to take action and know where to start. By start I mean getting clues as to what your problems origin is and doing research to find out more.
Let me give you a personal example. About 2 years ago I started developing red dots on my body, for the most part on my hands and chest. I didn’t pay much attention to it and hoped it would go away and one day I felt a sharp sting. All the areas of my body which were covered with these dots began to sting. The pain was excruciating and I had no idea what it was.
The following day I set up an appointment with my doctor. When I explained to him my problem, he told me it was most likely related to food allergies and I should stay away from sugar like products. He also prescribed to me a drug which he said would help me relax and control the pain.
I took his advice and began lowering my sugar intake. But unfortunately this did not help and neither did the drug he prescribed. In fact that same drug I took made me feel drowsy for over 10 hours and I felt exhausted, the pain however continued with no end in sight.
I stopped taking the drug and set up an appointment with a dermatologist. He took a look at my spots and his diagnosed me with pityriasis rosias. I made sure to ask him what the cause of it was and he replied “I don’t know it just happens and then disappears” and handed me a cream.
I was not satisfied with his answer and copied down the name of the “disease” to do my own research on it. While leaving the office one of the nurses said “oh you have those red dots too?” I said “apparently…” She said “yeah my son has those too, he’s had them for years now” I asked how old her son was and she told me “34”. That scared me thinking I would suffer from this for the rest of my life. However I did not give up.
I went home and after hours of looking online I found very few articles on the subject. One of the only helpful facts I found was that this “disease” did not like the sun hence why it never appeared on my face and hands which were always exposed to it.
I was frustrated at the lack of information and the pain came back again so I went into the bathroom to wash up. I noticed that when my skin was wet the pain was not felt and as I turned on the hot water steam came up and the pain hit me again. At the moment it became as clear as day what the cause of my problem was.
STRESS! Yes stress was the reason I suffered from this painful “disease”. And slowly it all became clear. I backtracked and remembered I was under a lot of stress for the past few months but would always hold it in and this was my body’s way of showing me what the problem was. My body could not take the stress and “healed itself” by releasing the stress in the form of these red dots on my body.
You see when a person gets frustrated his body temperature rises. I guess the best term for this is “Blood boiling” and when this would occur the spots would sting so the answer was simple stop the stress and you will stop this “disease”.
This was made clear when the steam was felt. Just as I predicted it was true and after 2-3 weeks the dots disappeared and it’s been over 2 years now and I haven’t seen them since. This brings me to my next point.
5)Investigate! Investigating your disease is your own responsibility. Ask questions such as:
What is this problem?
What is its CAUSE?
What can I do about it? And don’t be mistaken. I believe no matter what people tell you, you can always do SOMETHING about it!
Backtrack. It is important to backtrack past events in order to figure out where your problem may have originated from. Be the detective. Ask yourself how this could have happened. What did you eat? What did you do? How did you do it? Was it stressful? Was it painful? It’s not a simple task but it’s essential to ask yourself these questions.
The bottom line is if you’re suffering from a health problem there is a reason for it! Whether it’s how you eat, how you function, how much stress you endure, and so on and so forth. If you can come to some sort of conclusion do research on it. If you can’t find anything go to your doctor and ask his opinion. If he recommends you stop doing something, do it. See how it affects you.
In my case when the doctor told me my problem was related to food allergies and assured me he was correct I listened to him and stopped eating sugar and as you know it did not work. However I had clues to go by and even if it didn’t work I would not give up and you shouldn’t either! Don't be afraid to ask yourself questions. The answer could be right in front of you.
Finally when I had a name for my problem I began looking again and though I found few clues, it made me more aware of the problem and every time I would understand more and more. Ultimately what led me to solve my problem was backtracking and putting two and two together.
You can do the same thing if you follow these tips. Again:
Investigate. Be the detective!
Find the name of your problem
Find the cause of your problem
Do research on your problem
Backtrack events that may have led up to it!
Take action!
