The Right Shoes for You
Publish Date : 8/26/2007 4:45:00 AM   Source : Fitness News Onlypunjab.com

We are very much dependent on our feet. It is our daily transport in and around our small world we are functioning in. Without them we would be immobile. It is therefore of the utmost importance that we wear the correct and comfortable shoes.

It is also equally true that all it takes to reduce arthritis, pain in the feet, knees or hips is a new pair of shoes. For people with arthritis not just any pair of shoes will do. It must have support, stability and it must absorb shock. The right shoe may just lessen the pain.

Here are some tips to for choosing the right pair of shoes:

• Shoes must have a foot-like shape: Trace your bare feet on a piece of paper and take this with you when shopping. Place the shoes on the tracings and a good fit is when your toes are not showing.

• Support is very important: Look for an arch support inside and heel support at the back. The shoes should distribute the weight of your body so that no part of the foot bears more than its share.

• Shock on the feet should be absorbed by the shoes: To lessen the shock when your feet hit ground is to look for a soft rubber sole and cushioned insole.

• Your feet should have ample room inside the shoes to move: You should be able to wiggle your toes freely, and there should be space in front of all your toes. Avoid slip-on and backless shoes; they stay on your feet because they fit tightly. A well-fitting shoe slips slightly in the heel.

• Low heels are best: A heel less than three centimetres is best. Taller heels put too much pressure on the front of the foot.

• Look for stretchy uppers: Some shoes are made of a stretchable material or have elastic inserts. This allows the shoe to mould to the unique shape of your foot. Laces, buckles or Velcro fasteners help the shoe adapt to your foot. Make sure the shoe has a seamless lining as seams can rub against the feet and cause more pain.

• No slip shoes: These help prevent falls and so protect tender joints from injuries. Light shoes are also a good idea as they require less effort to walk in.

• Walking tall: Different kinds of arthritis can cause different kind of hip, knee and foot problems. Your feet may also suffer diabetes related problems. Talk to your podiatrist and doctor about what kind of shoe is best for you. You may find out that a hard-soled clog is better suited to your particular pain.

When you find the right shoes for you it is important to break in your new shoes slowly. Even the shoes are better for your feet than what you wore before; tender joints may find the different fit uncomfortable at first.

Like a Cinderella, try on all kinds of shoes until you find the right fit. Remember the saying “if the shoe fits …!”
