7 Tips for Conquering Adult ADHD
Publish Date : 9/13/2007 11:04:00 PM   Source : Fitness News Onlypunjab.com

In my experience, I believe that a lot of adult ADHD sufferers seem to spend their whole life, each and every day of it, feeling as if they are falling behind some unknown 'schedule' one small step at a time.

From the moment that they awake, already feeling as if they should have been up hours ago to make sure that everything gets done, the adult ADHD sufferer is never able to be satisfied.

Such an adult ADHD affected person seemingly has a gift for charging headlong through the day, always barreling along at supersonic speeds, forever trying to get something or other completed and, yet, still ending up getting absolutely nowhere!

On the flip side, there will be other days when nothing, absolutely nothing, clicks into place, and the same person will spend the whole day in a foggy, befuddled state, constantly aware of the things that they should be doing, but never quite having the energy or enthusiasm to tackle the jobs in hand.

They thus end a very unsatisfactory day feeling morose, lethargic, confused and generally at odds with the world.

Neither of these scenarios is a necessary part of being an adult ADHD sufferer!

If you can see yourself in this picture, then you must understand that there are quite a few things that you can do to start breaking out of this somewhat pointless, but nevertheless vicious, circle.

Here are 7 critical tips or skills that you can start to apply to your every day life to try to improve things

1. Try to take it easy.

Adult ADHD sufferers are almost always prone to moving and acting much more quickly than other people. So much so, in fact, that quite often, they never seem to finish one job before moving on to the next. Try to take a step back from life now and then, and make a conscious effort to slow down. Look at those around you, and try to go at their speed, rather than the one that your natural instincts are pushing you towards.

2. Make time for you.

Many adult ADHD sufferers have a tendency to put everyone else ahead of themselves in the queue. Whilst this is no doubt an admirable trait, try to put yourself forward for a bit of special treatment every once in a while too!

3. Know yourself and your own condition.

ADHD and the other associated forms of ADD will affect every different sufferer in a different way. Try to understand exactly how your own condition affects you as an individual, and thus, give yourself more chance of dealing with your own condition and circumstances.

4. Know your strengths and work to them.

Whether you are an adult ADHD sufferer or not, every human being has strengths and weaknesses, and you are no exception to this rule. Know your own strong points, what you are good at, focus on them and try to plan your day using these strengths. This will help you avoid getting into the negative spiral of constantly moving, but never actually going anywhere

5. Stay upbeat and positive about your life.

If you are forever negative and pessimistic, then life will never be something you can enjoy, or get the most out of. Thus, even when things are actually good and going well in reality, nevertheless, you will always be looking for the negative side. Think positively and do everything you can to be optimistic each and every day.

6. Plan everything that it is possible to plan.

Most adult ADHD sufferers are not naturally good at planning their day, or indeed, their lives. However, by planning properly and establishing realistic goals and objectives, you can begin to see yourself as more efficient than you might have previously believed. Managing your time in this way will help slow you down, and thus, you will actually tend to achieve an awful lot more than you previously managed.

7. Challenge yourself.

Try new things whenever you can, and step out of your comfort zone into the unknown. By doing this, you escape the hum-drum routine into which it is all too easy for the adult ADHD affected person to fall, and this escape will in itself help to rekindle your general zest and enthusiasm for life. Do not use your condition as an excuse to stay in your comfort zone, because it is this comfort zone that stresses the average adult ADHD sufferer out! Do something new as often as possible, because a change really IS as good as a rest, just as much for an adult ADHD affected person as it is for anyone else.
