Sachin Tendulkar Saturday scored his 34th Test century to equal Sunil Gavaskar's world record on the second day of the first Test against Bangladesh here.
Gavaskar, who was commentating on television when the 31-year-old reached his century playing his 119th Test, stood up to applaud Tendulkar at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.
Tendulkar, who made his debut on the 1989 tour of Pakistan, achieved the milestone while playing his 192nd innings, during which he has also scored 38 half-centuries and his highest being an uneaten 241.
The Mumbai star has also held 74 catches.
Gavaskar, who played 125 Tests and 214 innings for a tally of 10,122 runs at 51.12, the world record. He also had 45 half-centuries and grabbed 108 catches.
Tendulkar's century was a chancy one as he was given a few reprieves.
