Senator Cedillo Applauds Choice of Senator Escutia and Assemblymember
Publish Date : 12/11/2004 1:25:00 PM Source : Culture and Community News
“I thank Assemblymember and outgoing Latino Caucus Chair Marco Firebaugh for his leadership over the last two years,” said Senator Gilbert A. Cedillo, D-Los Angeles. “I appreciate all of his hard work and his continued support for the driver’s license issue. I applaud the choice of Senator Escutia as the next Chair because we will be well served by her experience, talent and passion, and I agree with her maxim ‘There is never a statute of limitations on doing the right thing.’ I also look forward to working with Assemblymember Coto and the energy and fresh ideas he brings to the position.”
A press conference was held in Sacramento earlier today to announce the new leadership of the Latino Caucus and denounce racist campaign tactics by the California Republican Party and the Jobs Political Action Committee against Latino candidates in the November election. Over half of the Latino Caucus was present in the Jesse Unruh hearing room as well as a representative of the Asian Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus who sent a letter to Latino Caucus members on Monday condemning the anti-immigrant campaign mailers.
“I am still disappointed that the California Republican Party and Jobs PAC would stoop to such a low in campaigning,” said Cedillo. “I thought we had moved beyond the days of Pete Wilson and the era of wedge issue politics. The governor’s silence on this matter is deafening and as Latino Caucus Chair Escutia said, ‘acquiescence.’ I echo her call that as the top Republican leader in the state, Governor Schwarzenegger should disavow the campaign tactics and the new anti-immigrant initiative being put out by Republican activists.’”
The Democratic candidates in the following four assembly races were all victims of anti-immigrant and anti-Latino campaign mailings paid for and/or sent by the California Republican Party and Jobs PAC. As it happened, all of the candidates that were targeted won by substantial margins.
