On December 9, 2004, Team Invacare athlete Krige Schabort became the first wheelchair racer to be inducted into the Honolulu Marathon Hall of Fame. That same weekend, he came away with his seventh victory in the Honolulu Marathon wheelchair division.
Schabort won this year's marathon with a time of 1:34:03. According to a Honolulu Marathon spokesperson, he was inducted to the Hall of Fame, because of his years of dedication to the marathon, his winning track record and his inspiring personal story.
"I am very excited and honored to be a part of The Honolulu Marathon Hall of Fame," said Schabort. He won the last seven Honolulu Marathons.
Schabort was fighting in the South African army in 1987, when a bomb explosion caused him to lose both of his legs. Now he is one of the world's fastest wheelchair racers. This year he also has had top finishes at The New York Marathon, The Columbus Marathon and The Detroit Marathon.
