Southern California and Oklahoma ended the regular season the same way they began it in The Associated Press Top 25: The Trojans are No. 1, and the Sooners No. 2.
It's the first time Nos. 1 and 2 stayed the same from the AP preseason Top 25 through the final regular season poll, though the Sooners shared second with Auburn for one week.
USC, the defending AP national champions, received 44 first-place votes and 1,599 points in Sunday's media poll, the last one before bowl games. The Trojans (12-0) beat rival UCLA 29-24 in their regular-season finale Saturday.
Oklahoma (12-0) padded its lead over No. 3 Auburn and gained ground on USC, receiving 14 first-place votes and 1,556 points. The Sooners beat Colorado 42-3 in the Big 12 title game Saturday night.
The Tigers (12-0) received seven first-place votes and 1,526 points. Last week, the Tigers and Sooners were separated by just 10 points. Auburn finished its regular season with a 38-28 victory over Tennessee in the Southeastern Conference title game.
USC and Oklahoma also took the top two spots in the final Bowl Championship Series standings and will meet in the Orange Bowl (news - web sites) for the national title.
Auburn finished third and goes to the Sugar Bowl to play Virginia Tech.
No. 4 California finished its regular season with a 26-16 victory over Southern Mississippi on Saturday night. The Golden Bears lost some support from the AP voters, dropping to 1,399 points, compared to 1,410 last week.
The drop was costly for Cal, which was passed in the BCS standings by No. 6 Texas and missed out on a Rose Bowl bid.
The Longhorns have 1,337 points — that put them 23 points closer to Cal in the AP poll than last week. Texas will play Michigan in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1.
Utah stayed at No. 5 in the Top 25. The Utes will play Pittsburgh in the Fiesta Bowl.
In the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll, USC, Oklahoma and Auburn are the top three. Cal is No. 4, but its lead over No. 5 Texas shrunk from 48 points to five.
In the AP poll, Louisville is No. 7, followed by Georgia, Virginia Tech and Boise State.
The Hokies' 16-10 win over Miami on Saturday gave them the Atlantic Coast Conference title and also caused the only movement in a poll that remained virtually unchanged this week. Virginia Tech moved up one spot, while the Hurricanes fell five places to No. 14.
Iowa is 11th, followed by LSU, Michigan, Miami, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Florida State and Virginia.
No. 19 Pittsburgh earned the Big East's automatic BCS bid with a 43-14 victory over South Florida.
Florida, which hired Utah coach Urban Meyer to replace Ron Zook, was No. 20. The final five spots in the poll were held by Arizona State, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Ohio State and Boston College.
