Unique, Ancient Chinese Arts Available for the First Time to People Around the World
Publish Date : 12/11/2004 9:59:00 AM Source : Culture and Community News
ArtsOrient, founded in September 2004, specializes in the rediscovery and production of lost arts from China’s glorious past. Produced only by highly-skilled artists and craftspeople, all pieces are 100% hand-made in central China’s Henan Province.
In today’s China, which is undergoing rapid modernization, many Chinese cultural legacies are disappearing at an alarming rate. ArtsOrient’s mission is to help preserve and strengthen the appreciation for Chinese traditions through the rediscovery, production, and promotion of ancient Chinese arts.
“China has seen thousands of forms of art come and go throughout its magnificent history. We are extremely pleased that, for the first time, people around the world have the opportunity to enjoy and appreciate these beautiful lost arts.” William Zhao, ArtsOrient founder.
ArtsOrient is currently focusing on the production of straw pyrography, an art form which originated during China’s cultural renaissance in the Sui Dynasty (580-618 A.D.) This art stepped into its golden age in the Tang Dynasty, regarded by historians as a high point in Chinese civilization. It became one of the most popular art forms in ancient China, favored by aristocrats, wealthy businessmen, and literati. However, with the overthrow of the Tang Dynasty in 907 A.D. and subsequent fragmentation of China into five northern dynasties and ten southern kingdoms, the art of straw pyrography was lost in the chaos caused by centuries of endless war.
Because of its high requirement on craftsmanship and complicated production technique, few people have been able to revive this ancient art. ArtsOrient is thrilled to be working with some of China’s finest, most experienced artists and craftspeople who have dedicated themselves to discovering, researching, and producing these treasures from China’s glorious past. |
