Unseasonal vegetables, the new mantra for Uttaranchal farmers
Publish Date : 12/10/2004 11:09:00 AM Source : Culture and Community News
The economic status of the villagers living in the hilly areas of Uttaranchal has improved vastly owing to the farming of unseasonal vegetables. Earlier, the farmers of this region used to grow only two crops in a year, which was not enough to sustain them. But this form of farming provides them with sufficient earnings to meet their needs.
Many self-servicing organisations are now promoting this form of farming. HIFEED Agro Services is one such organisation which helps farmers by providing them with seeds that are not easily available. Kisan Dabral, a coordinator of HIFEED, said that with the help of this farming, farmers are growing vegetables like tomatoes, cauliflowers, peas and so on in winters. "With the help of HIFEED, we are growing unseasonal vegetables like tomatoes, cauliflowers, which we never used to grow in winters earlier. This organisation has also helped in providing seeds to the farmers, which earlier were not easily available," he said Dharamchand Ramola , a local resident, says that these organisations play a very important role by providing seeds to the poor farmers, which are difficult to procure. "On these hilly areas it is difficult to produce seeds because we don't have sufficient land. Earlier, we used to get it from Delhi or Dehradun but with the help of these organisations we can get it easily right here," he said. This form of farming is becoming popular and if it is used on a large scale then it can revolutionise the whole agricultural system of the state. (ANI) |
