300 medics for Indo-Pak punjab Games
Publish Date : 12/9/2004 12:04:00 PM Source : Sports News Onlypunjab.com
At least 300 medics have been pressed into service for the inaugural Indo-Pak Punjab Games in Patiala. The death of the young Brazilian footballer and Dempo striker Cristiano Junior in Bangalore during the Federation Cup because of delay in provision of medical aid has highlighted the poor condition of the medical back up facilities to players in India. While in Western countries a sports medicine expert assists every team, in the sub continent there is still a lot to be done in this area.
Though the players taking part in the first Indo Pak Punjab games were satisfied with the medical back up facilities on offer, they were unanimosuly of the view that there was scope for improvement. "The wrestlers get injured in every step of the game. The doctors are required to be with the players all the time. In todays times, we need local medicines among others as the muscles get pulled or some other injury happens. We have seen that both in India and Pakistan, we are far behind Europe in terms of medical facilities for sportspersons," said Mohammad Umar, a Pakistani wrestler. In India there is also a lack of medical guidance to players prior to competitions. Doctors say that there is also an urgent need to involve specialists with individual players to diagnose a disease prior to participation in major sports events. Dr S P Sharma, assistant to civil surgeon, Patiala said, "I agree with you that the doctors with the sports medical ground should be associated with the team from the very begining. He should be able to identify players who are prone to such problems. If such a thing had been there, then this incident could have been avoided." In the Patiala Games, adequate medical back up has been provided to players, but there still remains a gap in the provision of sports medicine specialists in India. The reason: only one institute: National Institute of Sports is giving training in this regard. While abroad, sports medicine is a lucrative profession, in India the problem is that this profession is juicy only in cricket, and not in other sports as all the sponsorship money goes into the game of cricket.
