Elan Digital Systems has created a single 64 Ball Grid Array PCMCIA-to-UART bridge chip, the VPU16551, which is proving to be ideally suited for the burgeoning RFID card market.
A unique feature of this device is that data can be accessed simultaneously with an active COM port connection to the UART simply by connecting an SD Flash Card or SD controller to the parallel port of the VPU. It means that the RFID reader, using Elan's VPU bridge chip, can access data that is resident in Flash as well as providing the COM port for linking to the RFID module. This feature in particular is provoking a lot of interest among RFID card designers.
The space saving features of the VPU are also a plus because RFID cards pose serious design challenges as numerous other devices have to be fitted into a small area. Elan's VPU16551 is only 8 x 8 mm, and because the BGA package stands only 1.1mm off the PCB, this allows for reverse or top side PCB mounting. Further space-saving and manufacturing cost cuts come from the fact that the EEPROM used for the CIS is already integrated into the device. Full in circuit reprogramming is possible, plus the ability to store serial numbers or production lot data into the chip.
The device offers very low power consumption, is easy to use, and has its own reference kit enabling designers to create and test out their designs quickly and thoroughly before going to market.
