The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), one of India's largest referral hospitals, has served a legal notice to labour unions that had called a strike last week, officials said Monday.
Officials of AIIMS said the strike Thursday had created hindrances for thousands of people who had come to AIIMS for treatment, and the issue was not to be taken lightly.
"According to a high court ruling of two years ago, it is illegal to call a strike, and that is what the labour union did. The strike was totally uncalled for," said Arti Vij, spokesperson for AIIMS.
"Not a single patient could be treated Thursday."
On a regular day, AIIMS treats up to 7,000 patients.
On Thursday, drivers, attendants and ward boys, along with the labour unions had called a strike to protest the death of Somu Sagar, 17, the son of driver Ashok Kumar who worked at AIIMS.
Labour unions said the teenager, who died in AIIMS's casualty ward, lost his life due to a doctor's negligence.
Officials at AIIMS said a three-member enquiry committee, set up to look into the issue, would submit its preliminary report by the end of this week.
