The Board of Directors of the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) has named Anne Flanagan as Executive Director. Ms. Flanagan will have financial and operational responsibility for the AAPCC, a not-for-profit membership organization comprised of the 61 U.S. poison centers, and individuals and groups with an interest in reducing poison-related injuries and deaths.
Flanagan, an experienced health care executive, comes to the AAPCC after building and managing a successful healthcare consulting firm in Chicago. In this role she provided President and CEO services for hospitals nationwide, resulting in organization-wide financial and quality improvements.
“For poison centers to be effective in addressing local prevention and treatment needs, AAPCC must be able to anticipate and provide the support they need,” said Kathleen M. Wruk, RN, MHS, AAPCC President. “Anne brings the right mix of professional experience and leadership skills to ensure that AAPCC continues to meet challenges posed by our growing responsibilities.”
“Poison centers have always been, and will continue to be, a reliable resource for free, expert poison treatment and prevention advice,” said Flanagan. “But, as chemical threats and scientific discoveries emerge, we must also be ready to adapt operationally. Resources like the Toxic Exposure Surveillance System (TESS) and nationwide poison hotline (1-800-222-1222) are established contributions to public health, but we will continue to mine technology and build new alliances to ensure the public has continued access to expert emergency advice.”
Ms. Flanagan earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Hunter College in New York, New York. She received a Master of Science degree, with distinction, in Nursing Administration from Pace University in Pleasantville, New York.
