Authorites in Maryland Pass the Buck
Publish Date : 12/4/2004 6:35:00 PM Source : Culture and Community News
Authors from all over the world are allegedly being victimized by PublishAmerica LLLP Maryland. In numerous letters written to the Maryland authorities, including but not limited to the District Attorney’s Office, State’s Attorney, The Better Business Bureau, the Commissioners Office of Frederick, The Attorney General’s Office, The Federal Trade Commission, and the Maryland Consumer Affairs Department, the writers' requests for an investigation into this massive scam perpetrated by PublishAmerica were ignored or passed from one agency to the next. Despite an international petition offering not only the signatures of numerous victims, but also offers of documentation, evidence and testimony concerning the alleged illegal activities of PublishAmerica. Victimized authors are at a loss of where to turn for help.
Dave Kuzminski, an author advocate alleges, “They frequently misused ISBNs, copyrights, and trademarks belonging to others.” Numerous other authors claim that PA allegedly sold their product after their contracts have been terminated. None of those profits included a paid royalty to the author, even though PublishAmerica had no remaining legal right to print the author’s book. Furthermore, numerous authors have alleged that their minimal royalty checks were not only inaccurate, but some have not been received. Some authors received royalty reports without checks for the amounts, which is how they know those figures are inaccurate. Numerous authors notified authorities about this illegal activity six months prior to the initiation of the mass-author petition.
Rebecca Easton who is working with Dee Power to initiate this investigation, have been already been contacted by several media representatives including, Publisher’s Weekley Magazine and the Associated Press. They say, “The main goal of our petition is not to get the company out of business. It’s to investigate our allegations, and force PublishAmerica into complete honest disclosure about the services they intend to provide and what they deliver. We hope to spare other people, perhaps thousands, the frustration and problems we've had with this deceptive company.” The purpose of this release is not to exact revenge or harm a person, company or group. It's to promote investigation into author complaints.
Authors have been scammed into what they allege as false representation of availability of their books for consumers. Authors allege that Publish America does not edit as advertised, and that because of their poor quality product content, the worlds largest bookseller retailers will not stock PublishAmerica products, because of low industry standard pricing, binding, edit and copy format. Authors allege that Publish America who touts themselves as a “Traditional” publisher is nothing more than a wolf in sheep’s clothing getting rich quick on the shirt tales of the misinformed.
Some authors who asked lawful salability questions about this company have been targeted for smear campaigns, been sent condescending or emotionally abusive emails from the Publish America support staff, and in many cases, lives were effected for years because of a non standard company seven-year contract.
Easton says that she is contacted daily with more authors who allege PublishAmerica has misrepresented their services. |
