Being nice is only half due to your genes

Scientists have long believed that  various
human traits like altruism and social responsibility, which are a
part  of being a 'nice person' depend mostly on your  genes,  but
now  a  new  study by researchers at the  University  of  Western
Ontario in London, Canada, has found that it also depends on your
upbringing and peer group.
 
It  was also found that women are more socially responsible  than
men.
According to them, genes account for about 42 percent of socially
responsible  behaviour,  such  as voting,  keeping  promises  and
honouring commitments.
 
After studying over 300 pairs of twins, they found that around 23
percent   of  kindliness  could  be  explained  by   the   family
environment, which includes things like parenting style,  culture
and parental jobs. The other 35 percent has been accounted for by
factors like peer groups, reports the New Scientist.
 
They  found  that  overall, women had higher  scores  for  social
responsibility   than  men.  The  results  indicated   a   slight
difference in genetic contribution: 50 percent in men compared to
40  percent in women. The results also suggested  that  parenting
plays a greater role in a woman's social responsibility than in a
