Dark Skies Near Nation's Capital

The "Dark Skies Are Best!" group which promotes renewable energy usage and combats light pollution concluded a successful Thanksgiving Day demonstration near the Nation's Capital in Washington, DC, according to Dr. Lani Jo Smith, its Virginia-based founder.
    
"We handed out over 400 40-watt 'Energystar' rated light bulbs today," said Smith, glowing from the group's excitement at having had a popular reception among Washington DC residents and tourists on a cold and blustery Thanksgiving Day. "Most people can save about 40% of their electric bill just by changing to more efficient bulbs, those with the 'Energystar' rating," she added. The "Dark Skies Are Best!" demonstrators numbered close to 50 as they stood near the Capital.
"Washington DC has a lot of night time light pollution, from all of the upward directed lights illuminating buildings for presumed artistic value," Smith noted. "The same public goal--seeing where you are going--can be achieved with downward facing bulbs of lower wattage. But that's not to say we need more dim-bulbs in Congress!" she joked.
         
"Dark Skies Are Best!" conducted its demonstration first near the Nation's Capital along Independence Avenue, and ended with a march to the trendy and exceptionally well-lit Georgetown just as the sun set along the Potomac. "Hopefully we have convinced more folks today to be thankful for the chance to save money by reducing their electric bill through smart light usage," Smith stated.
