Pakistan's principal opposition grouping has asked the government to defer Thursday's National Security Council (NSC) meeting, which it is boycotting to protest President Pervez Musharraf's dual offices.
The Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) said Wednesday its concerns on the issue needed to be discussed first, reports Online news agency.
The MMA had boycotted the first meeting of the NSC in June.
MMA chief Fazlur Rehman told reporters that the grouping's supreme council, at its meeting here Wednesday, discussed assurances from Prime Minster Shaukat Aziz and NSC general secretary Tariq Aziz that its concerns would be discussed.
He said the MMA was ready to hold talks with the government and also attend the NSC meeting at a later date if its concerns were addressed.
The MMA is upset with Musharraf for reneging on his promise to shed his army chief's uniform by Dec 31.
