Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee Friday directed the government to look into an incident of vandalism in Kerala last month when Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) activists allegedly replaced the national flag with their party flag.
"I have directed the government to look into the matter and take appropriate action according to law," Chatterjee told lawmakers from Kerala who raised the issue in the Lok Sabha.
Raising the issue as a matter of public importance, C.K. Chandrappan of the Communist Party of India said a group of IUML activists was responsible for the vandalism at Karipur airport in Kerala.
The activists had gone to the airport to receive their leader and controversial Kerala Industries Minister P.K. Kunhalikutty on his return from Makkah.
"They (IUML activists) had taken complete control of the airport, climbed to the top of the building, removed the national flag and hoisted the party flag," he said.
Chandrappan, joined by other lawmakers from Kerala, asked the civil aviation minister to initiate a probe and bring the culprits to book.
Stating that the matter was serious, Chatterjee immediately instructed the government to take up the issue.
