The Slovenian pharmaceutical market is relatively advanced, if small. Slovenian medical care is generally the best in eastern Europe, spurred on by the early introduction, in 1992, of a universal healthcare insurance system. The country has a sizeable domestic industry, although this concentrates on supplying export markets. Imported drugs account for around 60% of the market. There are difficulties in the market, however. Regulations are not yet fully aligned with the EU, and government pricing/reimbursement policies have hit hard over the past two or three years. Weak IP laws have helped domestic producers, but at the expense of the multinational industry.
