A delegation of shippers from India called on Pakistan's acting President Mohammad Mian Soomro here Thursday and discussed matters related to the promotion of trade and commerce in South Asia, Online news agency reports.
The shippers and representatives of shipping lines led by Jimmy Sarbh, chairman and managing director of P&O Ports at Mumbai, also talked about port facilities being provided to lines in Pakistan.
The Indian delegation briefed Soomro about problems related to their business and put forward various proposals to improve facilities at Pakistan's ports.
Soomro said the thaw in Pakistan-India relations was a good omen for promotion of trade between the two countries.
Pakistan attaches great importance to the ports and shipping sectors and has set up a separate ministry for them.
The secretary for ports and shipping and representatives of Port Qasim Authority gave presentation to Soomro on port and shipping facilities and steps taken to develop the port and shipping sectors of the country.
Pakistan is keen to promote trade links with neighbouring countries and there are lots of prospects for promoting commerce with central Asia via Pakistan, Soomro said.
Gwadar Port would be a centre of trade activities to Central Asia, China and the Middle East, he said, emphasising that foreign businessmen should use this channel to promote their business activities.
