Landed from London to face six months jail
Publish Date : 11/26/2004 2:49:00 PM Source : Legal News Onlypunjab.com
A student arrested on charges of terrorism immediately after he landed here from London in June has claimed he is innocent and was tortured in police custody.
Anees Mohiuddin, 28, released from Cherlapally jail Wednesday night after the Andhra Pradesh High Court granted him bail, said he had been studying in London for the last four and a half years and never had any links with any terrorist group. Married to a city girl over telephone, Anees said he was coming to Hyderabad to meet his bride and host a wedding reception when police arrested him. "I was shocked when I landed at the airport on June 10. Even as my parents and other family members were waiting to receive me, the security personnel took me away from the runway," he said. "I wanted to know the reason for my arrest, but they ordered me to accompany them. I was blindfolded and taken to some secret location. They interrogated me for many days and even mentally tortured me. I was not even allowed to sleep for six days. They wanted to know from me about people I never met," said Anees at his residence in Rein Bazar in the walled quarter. "They wanted to know to whom was I sending the money from London. The fact is that I had taken an educational loan of Rs.200,000 from a bank and it is yet to be repaid," said Anees, pursuing Master of Science from Middlesex University. The youth claimed that the police tried to force him to confess that his other name was Abu Ayub Ansari. "My name is Anees Mohiuddin and I was never called Abu Ayub Ansari," he said. His counsel Padmanabh Reddy submitted before the court that Anees's arrest was a case of mistaken identity. He said the police were looking for Abu Ayub Ansari but arrested Anees on the basis of wrong information. It was a tearful reunion for Anees with his family members.
"We had to wait for six months to meet him after he arrived in Hyderabad," said his father Gulam Dastagir.
Soon after Anees' arrest, the police had claimed that he had links with the terrorist outfit Lashker-e-Toiba and Pakistan's Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) and was involved in two murders and four bomb blasts in the city.
Police said he was also involved in bomb blast at a Hindu temple here in 2002 that killed two people. |
