M.D. Offers Expert Advice on Defense and Recovery from Terrorism

Picture this: Two rusty old boats; one sails into the New York Harbor, another sails into the San Francisco Bay near the Golden Gate Bridge. Both boats are carrying one-megaton thermonuclear devices set to detonate simultaneously, which is a favorite tactic of Al Qaeda. The devastation caused by these attacks would flatten and burn everything with a seven-mile radius, in addition to vaporizing bridges and halting transportation of food and supplies.

While this scenario is grim at best, there are other instances which should cause an equal amount of concern among citizens. For instance, unintentional damage to a container holding atomic, biological or chemical (ABC) agents would cause leakage of radiation, biological agents or chemicals into the atmosphere. Another circumstance would be the accidental detonation of one of these weapons. In either case, the accident may occur in a highly populated area, which could include civilian, commercial or military installations.
According to Richard A. Thompson, MD, an expert in the effects of ABC biological warfare on general populations, the best weapon against panic is preparation and discipline. In his book, Defense and Recovery from Atomic, Biological and Chemical Terrorism and Warfare: A Manual for Survival, Dr. Thompson discusses ways for ordinary citizens to protect themselves in the event of an ABC disaster.

“This book is intended to help the general public understand how to survive a disaster of this magnitude,” stated Dr. Thompson. “We must ‘get real’ about protecting our country. Individual knowledge of ABC terrorism and warfare recovery is essential to developing the organization and management of recovery.”

Dr. Thompson first became interested in ABC warfare when he served as an industrial medical officer at the Norfolk Navy Air Repair Facility. After numerous years of crafting his book, he felt that it was time to educate the general public.
