The Islamic Broadcasting Network, IBN, is the first radio network broadcasting 24-hour daily news and programs to the Muslim community in the United States and abroad via its Internet webcast at www.ibn.net. IBN is an affiliate of the Islamic Media Foundation, a national non-profit organization based in the Washington DC area.
In continuation of its goal to provide Muslim youth with avenues of learning, acquaintance with Islam and fellow Muslims, and forums to discuss their issues and concerns, IBN has launched its new “IBN Youth Site”, at http://youth.ibn.net.
The site primarily focuses on bringing Muslim youth together to help them learn about Islam as a way of life, and increase their attachment to their religion. Program Director Hana Baba says, “This site provides young Muslim adults and teens with a wide array of resources and features such as career and school advice, Islamic knowledge, youth-oriented articles and audio clips, as well as entertaining aspects such as jokes, and the ‘Top 5 Islamic songs’”.
The most popular feature is the Advice column, wher eyouth can anonymously send in their concerns and get replies from experiences and qualified people. Another main feature is the discussion board, where youth can engage in conversation about the issues that matter most to them. Advice is also given to young Muslims with everyday challenges relating to friendship, family, peer pressure, and relationships.
The site was designed to be able to compete with other youth sites available on the Internet. The site’s creator, IBN’s Abdul Malik Ahmad, says he took into consideration the high standards of today’s teen websites, and produced IBN Youth accordingly. Mr. Ahmad says, “We had to make it colorful, visually stimulating, and vibrant with activity. It was developed using the latest Flash and ASP technology.” According to Mr. Ahmad, Muslim youth have little or no attractive places online where they can learn, converse, share experiences, and have clean fun all at the same time. And, he says, that is what IBN Youth hopes to achieve.
The IBN Youth Site was officially launched April 1, 2004 on the Internet and is rated as the top Muslim youth site by users.
