NASA Delays Mach 10 Flight

NASA mission controllers decided to delay the flight of their supersonic X-43A aircraft until Tuesday after instrument trouble caused them to miss their planned Monday launch.

The unmanned "scramjet," which gets its power from an experimental engine that has no moving parts, was to make history by soaring through the sky at 7,000 mph, or ten times the speed of sound, sometime between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. But at 2:50 p.m., NASA engineers at Edwards Air Force Base in California were still preparing the X-43A and its B-52 launch plane for takeoff. That's when mission controllers decided that it would be better to wait another day.
