Pakistan's information technology sector
believes that it is in for a windfall following the Indian
government's decision to heavily tax foreign firms seeking to
establish a foothold in that country.
New Delhi's move to impose a 35 percent cess on foreign firms,
the Pakistan IT industry claims will divert the foreigners
attention towards Pakistan, especially when the question of
setting up call centres arise.
"India has just imposed the tax. It would start reflecting in a
month and we expect to gain advantage of the situation," said
Nasir Lone, country manager of The Resource Group (TRG), a US-
based private investment firm with a focus on the business of
call centres and outsourcing. According to the Daily Times, the
Indian government last month put all foreign firms with software,
research and development and customer service operations, under
the new tax slab. Previously, foreign IT firms operating in
India were exempt from income tax.(ANI)
