Frost & Sullivan has honored ProMetic Life Sciences Inc. with the 2004 Bioseparation Technology Leadership Award for turning a bold vision into reality and for its sustained technological leadership in the bioseparation sector.

This annual award is bestowed upon the company that has pioneered and steered technological advances in its industry by providing cutting-edge products and concepts. It recognizes a company's successful technology development that is expected to bring significant contributions to the industry in terms of adoption, change, and competitive posture.

The award acknowledges ProMetic's outstanding efforts in developing the innovative Mimetic Ligand(TM) technology that consistently delivers pure and high-yield proteins from non-homogenous biological sources.

ProMetic's Mimetic Ligand(TM) technology is not recent and is a product of over 15 years of in-depth research into bioseparation, particularly protein purification and pathogen removal from biological sources. By this technology, bioseparation or protein purification of a biological source is accomplished through systematic extraction.

"The uniqueness of ProMetic's technology lies in its novel approach to immobilize ligands on a hard base such as Agarose or Teflon beads," says Frost & Sullivan Industry Analyst Giridhar Rao. "In order to enhance the process, the company has developed proprietary Purabead(R) Agarose beads that efficiently adsorb ligands."

It is estimated that 50% of the cost of goods of biopharmaceuticals are related to bioseparation steps. "ProMetic's technology is cost-effective, environment friendly, and is not capital intensive," explains Rao. Over 40 market players including Aventis, GlaxoSmithKline, and Novo Nordisk have adopted ProMetic's revolutionary ligands technology. In fact, GlaxoSmithKline's six global research and development centers are already utilizing this technology.

In an example of successful private-public partnership, ProMetic has initiated two collaborations with the American Red Cross Society. In the first project, the aim is to develop a process that efficiently removes pathogens from biological sources such as blood. The first product of this joint-venture is a novel affinity filter designed for the removal of prions responsible for BSE or mad cow disease and variant CJD, the human form of the disease. The second venture involves developing a process to extract specific proteins from plasma, where the yield recovery of some of the highest value therapeutics is increased by as much as four folds.

With the backing of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the future for ProMetic's ligand technology looks bright. "FDA has not only validated the use of this technology for higher yield and purity products, but has also approved scores of products incorporating ProMetic's ligand technology," concludes Rao.
