When Ketty delivered eight puppies it caused much consternation in Jharkhand police headquarters with a show-cause notice being issued to her trainer. But there's happy news now for the sniffer dog with all her offspring being accepted for training.
The pampered black Labrador had even been labelled characterless by her trainer, who found himself in trouble with his superior officers over how Ketty, employed in the dog squad in Palamau district, had been allowed to stray.
Of such import was the matter that a Crime Investigation Department (CID) inquiry had also been instituted, but to no avail.
"It was the duty of the trainer to take care of all these things," said a senior police officer sternly.
Ketty was one of the four dogs inducted into the Jharkhand police dog squad last year. Her work as a sniffer dog was said to be outstanding and she had helped police detect many hidden landmines planted by Maoist guerrillas in Palamau.
But the dazzling career nose-dived with the birth of eight puppies six months ago.
Now, the worst seems to be over with the police force letting bygones be bygones and accepting Ketty's eight pups for training. They will soon be on their way to Gwalior. The government has even sanctioned Rs. 184,000 for the purpose.
At present the Jharkhand police has only six dogs. The inclusion of Ketty's babies will infuse sudden strength into the force.
Clearly, forget and forgive is the mantra. No more dogmatic views please.
