Ron Horne’s New Book on America’s Vanishing Immigrant
Publish Date : 11/17/2004 4:13:00 PM   Source : American Local News Onlypunjab.com

Personal Genesis Publishing announced this week that Ron Horne’s ground-breaking new book “Forgotten Faces – A Window Into Our Immigrant Past” is now available to the public via Wal-Mart’s online bookstore. This development marks the continued growth of the book’s popularity and availability with online retailers. Fueled by the acceptance of the public library systems as the most comprehensive reference book available on the neglected but beautiful art of photo-ceramic memorial portraiture, “Forgotten Faces” is now represented by every major distributor of books to academic, public and private libraries across the nation. As the first book ever published emphasizing the artistic merit and historical significance of photo-ceramic memorial portraits on tombstones, Personal Genesis Publishing projects library sales to grow exponentially and become its major market in 2005.

A feature article in the San Francisco Chronicle’s June 19th Bay Area Centerpiece marked the book’s publication. At that same time, Amazon.com highlighted the book as the most popular on its subject matter. In September of 2004, the book was evaluated by the San Francisco Public Library System and selected for purchase for all of its 27 branches. Impressed with the book’s originality, compelling photographs and comprehensive research on this previously unexplored subject matter, Laura Lent, Adult Collection’s Coordinator for the Main Branch issued this formal recommendation “Forgotten Faces eloquently expresses California's immigrant roots. With well researched essays and moving portraits, I highly recommend this beautiful and unique book.”

Other assessments of the book were highly complimentary as well. Jim Kerr, News Director and Host of “On the Town” for ABC/KNCO’s radio (8/2/04) called Forgotten Faces “a fascinating book, beautifully presented.” Kim Carrow, book reviewer for Odyssey Books and “The Union” newspaper (7/17/04) said of Forgotten Faces - “Brimming with rare photographs and historical commentary, this book is captivating.”

In October, 2004 as Barnes and Noble added “Forgotten Faces” to its on-line listing, this first-of-its-kind book emerged on the wholesale library market. Proclaimed “an important addition to the study of both cemeteries and immigrant life in the U.S.” by Gary Collison, Editor of the prestigious journal “Markers, Journal for the Association of Gravestone Studies” the book became recognized as the foremost reference to examine the origins, history and popularity of photo-ceramic portraits as a new record of the immigrant experience. Mr. Collison, in his review published in “Art & Antiques“ magazine article (12/03) also emphasized the book’s appealing presentation of portraits stating “Forgotten Faces is a stunning gallery, filled with haunting echoes of the past. … a wonderful selection, beautifully photographed , intimate and captivating images. It gives the reader an Ellis Island experience”

With an original collection of well-preserved examples affirming this neglected art form, Personal Genesis Publishing, entered into separate marketing agreements for the distribution of “Forgotten Faces” to the top four library wholesalers and distributors in the United States. Leading this influential group was Baker & Taylor, Inc., the second largest book distributor in the United States and the largest distributor to libraries in the country. The publisher agreed to partner with Baker & Taylor for national distribution of the book including publication of the title in B&T’s respected catalog and superannotation listings.

Next, Quality Books, a leader in library distribution added the book to its catalog and placed a significant initial order. Emery-Pratt, a wholesaler specializing in academic, public and private library sales for over four decades, also initiated a direct marketing program focused on “Forgotten Faces.” Concurrently, Midwest Library Service, synonymous with superior service to libraries for over forty years, also placed a substantial initial order and represented the book in its listings

The inclusion of Wal-Mart.com as another prominent retail outlet just prior to the holiday season marks another milestone in interest generated for this innovative publication. The series “Forgotten Faces – America’s Lost History,” represents a completely new photo-history of American immigration. This landmark first book, “A Window Into Our Immigrant Past,” provides a break-through in the study and documentation of American immigrant history. Presenting a collection of 350 memorial portraits of immigrants from 28 different nations during the period 1900-1945, “Forgotten Faces” reveals the beauty and importance of this neglected art form and exposes the continued loss of these national heirlooms from our country’s heritage.
