A man in police custody for allegedly abducting two relatives of cricketer Virender Sehwag was shot dead when he made an escape bid Friday morning, police here said.
Sanjay Singh, 25, was shot when he tried to snatch a policeman's service weapon and escape on a highway between Sanjan and Bilad town of Valsad district, about 350 km from here, superintendent of police Abhaysinh Chudasma said.
"Singh was being taken to Umargam town when he complained of ill health. He was partially freed of his handcuffs when he snatched a commando's gun and fired a shot. Two inspectors shot him after that," said Chudasma.
Singh was arrested along with five alleged accomplices last month near Valsad on a charge of abducting two youngsters in Mumbai, reportedly related to Sehwag.
Police said they had confessed to being involved in a number of kidnappings and murders in Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh.
