After prolonged silence on a sex abuse case allegedly involving a minister, Kerala's ruling United Democratic Front (UDF) Wednesday decided to wait for the outcome of related cases in various courts.
"As of now, we decided for the law to take its course," said P.P. Thankachen, UDF convenor, about controversy involving Industries Minister P.K. Kunhalikutty, who allegedly sexually abused a minor girl eight years ago.
"This issue was discussed today (Wednesday) and Kunhalikutty explained his version and Chief minister Oommen Chandy briefed the meeting about the legal measures the government has taken," Thankachen told reporters after the UDF meeting that discussed the case that surfaced again recently.
Though the UDF had met early this month, it had not discussed the controversy that was ignited by the allegations of 22-year-old Regina that the minister thrice sexually abused her 1996.
Thankachen said no UDF constituent sought the minister's resignation at the meeting. "All the allies expressed their views on this issue. The common view was that this issue has not affected the unity of the UDF," said Thankachen.
Half a dozen cases on this issue are pending in various courts.
A division bench of the Kerala High Court is expected to express its views on two related public suits Thursday.
