A housekeeper with the Rashtrapati Bhavan and five members of his family attempted suicide at the presidential estate here by consuming insecticide, police said Sunday.
Police officials said housekeeper Nanu Ram, 60, his wife Asharfi, 55, their daughters Veera, 22, and Sunita, 17, and their son Ramsewak, 32, had attempted suicide Saturday night at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Ramsewak's 18-month-old son, Tarun, too was given the insecticide.
They were admitted to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. Police said all of them, except for Sunita, were out of danger.
The reason for the suicide was that Ramsewak's wife Ramwati had recently committed suicide, leading her parents to file a case of harassment against Ramsewak and his family members, police said.
"We were informed about the incident early morning. The six have been admitted to the emergency ward of the hospital," said Anita Roy, deputy commissioner of police (New Delhi).
Nanu Ram is a resident of the presidential estate.
