Italy has more indigenous grape varieties than any other wine country. Yet a number of these fascinating grape varieties are not offered by their varietal names but by their DOCs, such as Chianti, Barolo, Gutturnio, etc. Of course, those who are familiar with Italian wines know that Chianti is mainly made from Sangiovese, Barolo from 100% Nebbiolo but what about 'Gutturnio', this wonderful wine made in the hills of Emilia?
A classic, top quality Gutturnio is one of the most enjoyable and consumer friendly Italian reds but nearly impossible to sell on-premise or at retail in the USA due to its 'strange' DOC designation.
This is about to change.
'Canalegrande' wines will be marketed by the grapes that are actually in THE bottle. This will allow restaurants to offer 'unusual', high-quality Italian wines, such as 'Gutturnio', which is made from Barbera and Bonarda, by the glass and consumers the opportunity to discover Italy's 'other' wines 'sip by sip'.
'Canalegande' wines are sold exclusively online.
Quality wines come never 'cheap' and after these wines have gone through the typical US distribution channel (winery > importer > wholesaler > retailer > consumer) they become more often than not 'special' occasion wines. 'Canalegande' wines are sold exclusively 'winery direct' which will allow wine lovers to obtain high-quality, estate bottled, limited production Italian wines at substantial savings.
Canalegrande wines are
- super premium, estate-bottled wines made exclusively from native Italian grape varieties.
- exclusively sold at winery direct prices and serverd by-the-glass in the finest US restaurants.
- personally selected by J.K. Imports for their authenticity (terroir), excellent value and overall enjoyment.
Canalegrande No. 1: Daniela Rigamonti 2003
"Carefully vinified from a blend of selected Barbera (60%) and Bonarda (40%) grapes. The grapes were hand-picked, crushed separately and vinified according to the 'Marchesato Podere Casale' method. Thus the wine fermented first in large vats and then for a limited period in small oak barrels where it developed its nobel characteristics and aromas. Ruby red in color with a hint of rose hips on the nose. Full cherry fruit and the taste of almonds. The balanced, full-bodied wine is enjoyable to drink now but will continue to develop personality with further aging. Ideal with red and white meats, roast and braised beef."
