Biggest gold firm 'takeover bid'

South Africa's largest domestic gold producer Harmony will reportedly make a surprise takeover bid on Monday for the world's fourth biggest, Gold Fields.
A merger would create the world's biggest gold company - if accepted by Gold Fields' shareholders.
The Financial Times reported that Russian metals giant Norilsk Nickel, which has a 20% stake in Gold Fields, was backing the bid.
The FT said Gold Fields' plan to merge with Canada's Iamgold angered Norilsk. |
