Brownline, Inc., operator of a company-owned 55-unit refrigerated tractor-trailer fleet dedicated to the transport of seafood products from the U.S. Pacific Northwest and British Columbia to markets in the Midwestern and Southwestern United States, has gone live with a 13-user Freight Logix transportation management solution from Headwater Technology Solutions Inc., it was announced today by John Hilde and Mel Mills, vice presidents of Brownline and Headwater, respectively. According to Hilde, the purchase of Freight Logix was triggered by the need to comply with the new Automated Customs Environment initiative of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency (CBP). ACE rules make it mandatory for highway carriers to submit shipment information electronically to CBP prior to their arrival at the border. Many of Brownline’s loads originate in British Columbia and as a cross-border transportation leader, the company earlier had filed the first two ACE e-manifests in a pilot program at the Blaine, Washington port of entry.
Headwater announced the integration of the MSR eCustoms ACE e-Manifest solution with its Freight Logix Transportation Management System early in 2006, making Freight Logix one of the first TMS solutions to offer full compliance with the initiative. The integration allows electronic manifests to be prepared from Freight Logix load data with a mouse-click, with no further input required from the dispatcher.
"Besides providing expedited ACE compliance, Freight Logix also provides us with excellent integration of data for both inbound and outbound shipments," Hilde said. "Along with superior dispatch capabilities, it also provides automation efficiencies throughout the entire transportation process, integrating products for GPS and driver communication, document imaging, mileage engines, and more."
Freight Logix integrates all of the activities associated with transportation and freight management, from order entry through dispatch, rating to invoicing, driver and carrier settlement, and finance. It combines Less-Than-Truckload, Truckload, Pickup & Delivery (P&D) and Cartage functionality for Asset, Non-Asset and Logistics operations in a single solution. The system operates in the Microsoft Windows environment with an SQL database.
Founded in 1979 by Owner/President Jack Hilde, Brownline assembles TL and LTL loads from Puget Sound-area fishery sources from Vancouver, B.C. to Tacoma, Washington. It transports the product to cold storage warehouses, wholesalers and processors in Sacramento, the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles and San Diego, as well as in Phoenix, and Chicago, sometimes with stops along the way. Typical loads are comprised of groundfish such as halibut and cod, wild and farmed salmon, crab and shellfish. Backhauls are arranged through brokers in the Midwest, and the company arranges its own return loads from the Western destinations.
