Spas have long touted the healing properties of mud therapy - mud facials, clay masks, mud body wraps.
Children, from the beginning of time, have touted mud for its endless entertainment properties.

Where previously thought of as a "girl thing" or as a messy entertainment option for kids, mud is quickly becoming the preferred remedy of stress and pressures in modern American culture.

One luxury spa resort in Southwestern Pennsylvania has combined the healing and relaxing properties of mud with its presence in nature to create the perfect adventure package - Mud Therapy.

Created by Nemacolin Woodlands Resort as a package for those looking for an early spring escape, Mud Therapy combines luxurious overnight accommodations with a 90-minute driving session in a Toyota FJ Cruiser at Nemacolin's Off-Road Driving Academy and a Moor Mud Wrap from Nemacolin's award-winning Woodlands Spa.

Nemacolin has created Mud Therapy at a time when modern spas are seeing more men who appreciate the need to rejuvenate and relieve stress, and women are more actively seeking adventure thrills commonly targeted towards men.

"It's no secret that spas are seeing increasing numbers of men as customers," says Lisa Meinhofer, director of the Woodlands Spa at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort. "As more men use spas and become comfortable with the therapies offered, we see them trying more traditionally feminine, mud treatments."

"We see women wanting to have more of an adventure experience, something out of the ordinary - and they are doing so in groups, as big girlfriend trips or just a couple of friends," says Jon Pitcavage, director of recreation at the resort. "The trend seen in the spa with a shifting clientele base is no different in our area, but our growing segment is definitely women."

Nemacolin's Off-Road Driving Academy teaches the skills essential to off-road driving on two custom-designed courses across 18 miles of wooded trails in Toyota FJ Cruiser's and Hummer H1's and H2's. No off-road experience is necessary to hop into the driver's seat of one of Nemacolin's highly capable off-road vehicles, but the terrain is capable of challenging the most experienced drivers.

Nemacolin's award-winning Woodlands Spa is three-stories and 32,000 square-feet, featuring 34 massage rooms and over 100 body, skin, facial and nail treatments that pamper, heal, and detoxify. Designed on the principles of feng shui, the Woodlands Spa offers treatments for individuals, couples and expectant moms, plus the heated pool, fitness center and nutrition consultations bring health full-focus. Signature treatments include the Water Path, Hot Stone Shirodhara, Dreamcather, Kila Body Works, and a variety of facials. Services and treatments vary in length from 25 minutes to two hours.
