The Island Heritage Festival, from June 28-July 2, will honor the history and culture of the "Gullah People", and the historic treasures of James Island, their Sea Island home. A special outdoor showing of the movie Porgy and Bess will be part of a tribute to native son, "Goat" Sammie Smalls, the colorful figure who served as the inspiration for DuBose Heyward's novel Porgy. Heyward, his wife, and George Gershwin, later co-wrote the beloved opera Porgy and Bess, set in Charleston's fictitious Catfish Row. The historic Heyward House, where the works were written, will host an Opening Reception. Other events include a program of Conversations with relatives of "Goat Sammie", an Island Heritage tour, a Sunset Gullah Cruise, a children's Cultural Literacy Festival, and the Taste of Gullah Celebration, with food and entertainment. Contact the Festival Office at 843-727-1875 for more information. Tickets can be purchased by calling 1-800-595-4TIX.
