Pacific Pension Institute (PPI) held its fourth annual Asian Pension Fund Roundtable at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Seoul, Republic of Korea from October 12-13. The theme for this year’s event was Building Asia’s Pension Systems: The Key to Sound Capital Market Performance.
Pension fund managers from across Asia joined global investment practitioners, experts in international finance, investment, fund management, governance, and global affairs. Approximately 155 pension fund and investment management experts from 20 countries representing Asia, North America and Europe participated in the event.
Dr. Lee Hong-Koo, former prime minister of South Korea, delivered a keynote focusing on recent events triggered by North Korea’s reported detonation of a nuclear bomb and prospects for a diplomatic solution in upcoming days. Jang Ha-Sung, dean of Korea University Business School, discussed his views on the evolution of corporate governance in Asia and implications for Asia’s pension fund managers.
One of five breakout discussions focused on prospects for infrastructure investments and featured Julie Kim from the RAND Corporation, Christopher Ailman, CIO of California State Teachers’ Retirement System and Dr. Woonki Sung, CEO of Darby Hana Infrastructure Fund Management Company.
Ailman, chair of the PPI Board of Directors, served as co-chair of the Asian Roundtable along with Priya Mathur, a CalPERS trustee.
PPI’s 2007 Asian Pension Fund Roundtable will be held in Singapore in early November.
