Employers Can Now Recapture Profits: HPM Bootcamp Teaches Exact How-To’s
Publish Date : 1/17/2007 9:36:00 AM Source : Insurance News Onlypunjab.com
A veritable alphabet soup of regional employer health coalitions from the Midwest and Northern Plains to the Northeast and South will serve their members a unique nationwide series of three-day, intensive training sessions geared toward corporate leaders in search of a hands-on approach to implementing health and productivity management (HPM) strategies. Among those that have just signed on to host HPM Bootcamp, whose first of 18 events will kick off Feb. 20-22, 2007 at the Bethesda Marriott in Bethesda, Md.:
· St. Louis Area Business Health Coalition (BHC) · Buyers Health Care Action Group (BHCAG) · New York Business Group on Health (NYBGH) · Georgia Healthcare Leadership Council (GHLC)
Similar organizations that previously agreed to host events in their area include the MidAtlantic Business Group on Health (MABGH) in Greenbelt, Md., and Employers Coalition for Healthcare Options (ECHO) in Huntsville, Ala.
Featuring university-style learning events with insights from national experts who promote an evidence-based and outcomes-driven focus, HPM Bootcamp will be sponsored by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, Healthways, Inc. and The Fort Hill Company. HPM Bootcamp is educationally accredited to offer valuable and significant CE, CME and HR credits upon completion of each course. Please see the entire 2007 schedule at www.HPMbootcamp.com">www.HPMbootcamp.com.
"There is a growing awareness of the power of employers to shape a better health care system and a healthier workforce," says Louise Probst, executive director of the BHC. "HPM Bootcamp brings employers together to learn, share experiences, analyze and plan actions that will allow them to fully appreciate and capitalize on these opportunities."
BHC is a non-profit organization celebrating its 25th year of serving St. Louis area employers. Its mission is to support employers in their efforts to enhance the quality and overall value of their investments in health benefits while seeking to improve the health of their enrollees.
"HPM Bootcamp realizes that health care is becoming increasingly expensive and complex and that human resources is having to focus more on measuring the effect their programs, like employee health benefits, have on corporate performance," says Carolyn Pare, CEO of the Bloomington, Minn.-based BHCAG, which also realizes HR, benefits and employee assistance program professionals need guidance on how to navigate a developing sea.
Formed in 1988, the BHCAG is a coalition of public and private employers working to recreate the health care system so consumers will get the care they need in the right place, at the right time and at the right price. BHCAG is a founding member of eValue8 that was created by leading U.S. employers and coalitions as a way for health care purchasers to buy and evaluate health plans based on their performance and value instead of solely on price.
"With the link between positive human resources performance and healthy bottom lines, as well as the need for metrics to show that link becoming more apparent, HPM Bootcamp will help employers foster a healthy environment for their employees and implement value-based benefits plans," according to Laurel Pickering, executive director of the NYBGH.
Founded in 1982, the NYBGH is a not-for-profit coalition of 150 businesses and is the only organization in the New York metropolitan area exclusively devoted to employer health benefit issues. NYBGH functions as the forum for businesses to explore contemporary health care issues and find practical resolutions. Members include employers and health-related organizations. The mission of NYBGH is to provide leadership and knowledge to employers to promote a value-based, market-driven health care system.
James Purcell, president of the GHLC, describes the HPM concept as a conduit to make meaningful value-based judgments in procuring health care and crafting a benefit plan design that ensures employees will be both healthy and productive. "It’s a goal that every HR director should be focused on," he says, hoping members who attend HPM Bootcamp ascertain outcomes measures from their wellness and disease management programs. "The data reporting elements are sorely missing."
GHLC is an Atlanta-based organization of major employers and their provider partners seeking to improve the quality and efficiency of health care in the state.
John Miller, executive director of the MABGH and an HPM Bootcamp faculty member, cautions that one of the difficulties employers face is "finding ways to quantify and put into practice the theoretical discussions about what productivity is and how it relates to return on investment."
MABGH, founded in 1977 as a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization, is an association of major purchasers that include county governments and school systems, financial services firms, manufacturers, utilities, hospitality industry providers and others.
Karen Hill, president and CEO of ECHO, describes HPM Bootcamp as an opportunity for attendees to leave with a toolbox and knowledge of how to apply various tools within their own corporate setting. "We are pleased to offer Alabama employers an integrated approach to promoting health, and programs that strategically and systematically motivate employees to health achievement while improving the employer’s bottom line," she says.
ECHO is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Alabama not-for-profit corporation NABGH, North Alabama Business Group on Health. NABGH was incorporated in 1981 by a small group of visionary business leaders and was created to provide a forum for local employers to share information about the costs and quality of local health care benefits and services. Since that time the coalition has grown to become business’s voice in healthcare. Currently ECHO represents a 30-member group in Alabama.
