Back in 1978, a relatively unknown Polish archbishop was elected as the 264th Pope of the Universal Catholic Church. The 58-year old Cardinal Karol Josef Wojtyla took the name John Paul II.
Referred to as “a pastor to the world, a man of peace”, Pope John Paul II played a significant role in shaping events to a degree unrivalled by any other else in the world. He helped bring down communism in Eastern Europe, campaigned against war and the excesses of capitalism, and sought to heal divisions between Christians and Jews. He worked untiringly to plead for world peace.
The most tireless voice of a secular age and the most consistent and frequent advocate of peace and human rights for the last two decades, Pope John Paul II reminded humankind of the worth of individuals in the modern world. He was not just a man of faith but his whole identity was.
In his final years, his step became halted by illness and infirmity; his speech became laboured. But his indomitable spirit touched and taught us all.
