"The Phat 5" of College Basketball at 500 Report Volume #8 (NBA All-Star Week) is dedicated to Orlando "Tubby" Smith. Coach Smith made history on May 12, 1997 when he was hired as the 20th head-coach for Kentucky basketball. UK is the winningest college basketball program of All-Time. Coach Smith became the 3rd African-American to win an NCAA National Championship in 1998 (J. Thompson-1984 and N. Richardson-1994). He was awarded the Naismith Coach of the Year in 2003. Coach Smith has won 5-SEC regular-season titles and 5-SEC Tournament titles. He is the only African-American to coach 10-plus seasons at a "Phat 5" program. He has compiled over 375 wins in 15-plus seasons as a head-coach.

Kentucky- Randolph Morris is averaging 15.7 ppg. and 7.4 rpg.
N. Carolina- Tyler Hansbrough is averaging 18.4 ppg. and 7.8 rpg.
UCLA- Arron Afflalo is averaging averaging 17.4 ppg.
Kansas- Brandon Rush is averaging 14.6 ppg. and 5.9 rpg.
Duke- Josh McRoberts is averaging 13.2 ppg, 7.9 rpg., and 3.6 apg.

Randolph Morris improved his scoring and rebounding the last 4 games with UK going 3-1. Morris scored 18 points and grabbed 9 rebounds during the loss this past Saturday (02/10) to #1 ranked Florida at home. Tyler Hansbrough had one of his best all-around games of the season vs. Miami (01/31) scoring 22 points and snatching 13 boards as UNC scored 105 points for the second time this season. Hansbrough had 24 and 8 during the in-state loss to N. State. Tyler looks like an ACC all-first team selection. Arron Afflalo continues to be steady for the Bruins. Afflalo scored a season-high 27 points in a loss this past Saturday (02/10) on the road vs. W. Virginia. Afflalo will a PAC-10 all-first team selection for the Bruins. Brandon Rush scored a sub-par 10 points in a home loss to #8 Texas A&M. Rush bounced back with 21 and 18 points in wins vs. Kansas St. and Missouri. Josh McRoberts and his Duke Blue Devils have struggled since the last "Phat 5" at 500 Report Volume #7.

The Duke Blue Devils who were ranked #8 in the AP and #10 in ESPN/ USA Today polls two weeks ago are in the midst of a 4-game losing streak. The Devils dropped out of the Top 25 for the first-time in 11 years, since the end of the 1995-96 season. Duke had been ranked in 200 straight polls (the second most of All-Time) before Monday 2/12/07. The 3 longest streaks of being ranked in the college basketball polls belong to "Phat 5" programs.

1. UCLA 221 weeks 1966-67 to January 8, 1980.
2. Duke 200 weeks 1995-96 to February 12, 2007.
3. N. Carolina 172 weeks from 1990-91 to January 17, 2000.

UCLA has the longest current active streak of 34 straight weeks in the Top 25 polls.

Kentucky 18-7, 7-4 SEC E. ranked #18 in the new ESPN/ USA Today and #20 in the AP polls. Kentucky lost to a strong Tennessee squad last night (02/13) 89-85. The Wildcats were riding a 3-game winning streak that put them back in the Top 20 before they faced the #1 team in the country Florida this past Saturday (02/10). UK took the defending NCAA Champs down to the final seconds, but lost 64-61 in front of a jam-packed Rupp arena crowd of 24,000 fans. The Cats had impressive wins over Arkansas coming from 14 points down on the road to win 82-74 (02/03). Kentucky out ran South Carolina at home 95-89 last Wednesday (02/07). Kentucky sits in second place in the SEC East division. UK's remaining 5 games of the regular-season.

N. Carolina 22-4, 8-3 ACC ranked #4 in the new AP and ESPN/ USA Today polls. Carolina was swept for season by Virginia Tech last night (02/13) losing in overtime at home 81-80. UNC was 14-0 at the Dean Dome prior to the game vs. the Hokies. The Tar Heels were riding a 5-game winning streak after a dominating 41-point victory over the Miami Hurricanes 105-64 (01/31). UNC faced in-state rival N. C. State on the road and was handed a 83-79 loss (02/03). The Heels then went to Duke for the much-anticipated "Phat 5" vs. "Phat 5" showdown vs. the Blue Devils. UNC used a late second half rally to win 79-73. Carolina hosted W. Forest this past Saturday (02/10) and posted a high-flyin' 104-67 victory. Michael Jordan, Sam Perkins, and James Worthy were in attendance as UNC celebrated the 25th Anniversary of their 1982 NCAA Championship win over Georgetown. UNCs' remaining 5 games of the regular season.

Vince Carter (UNC) of the New Jersey Nets is the only former player at one of "The Phat 5" to be selected to the NBA All-Star game.

UCLA 21-3, 10-2 PAC-10 ranked #5 in the new AP and #7 in the ESPN/ USA Today polls. The Bruins were riding a 3-game winning streak like "Phat 5" member Kentucky until this past Saturday (02/10) at W. Virginia. The Mountaineers defeated UCLA 70-65. The Bruins were the second ranked team in the country before the loss. The Bruins beat then #9 ranked Oregon at home (02/01) 69-57 to avenge their first loss of the season. The 82-35 47-point win over Oregon St. (02/03) was their most-lopsided victory of the season. UCLA beat #21 ranked USC last Wednesday (02/07) 70-65. UCLA has 6 remaining games to end the regular-season.

Kansas 21-4, 8-2 Big 12 ranked #8 in the new ESPN/ USA Today and #9 in the AP polls. The Jayhawks were riding a 3-game winning streak just as Kentucky and UCLA before they hosted then #8 ranked Texas A&M. The Aggies came into KU and left with a very impressive 69-64 victory (02/03). KU has posted two dominant victories over Kansas St. (02/07) 97-90 and on the road at Missouri 92-74 this past Saturday (02/10). Julian Wright had a career-game scoring 33 points and grabbing 12 rebounds during the win over the Tigers. Wright had 3 highlight reel dunks to electrify the Tiger fans. KU has 6 remaining games to end the regular-season.

Duke 18-7, 5-6 ACC unranked in the new AP and ESPN/ USA Today polls. The Blue Devils have been the toast of college basketball the last 15 years. They have won 3 National Championships over that stretch. Now the Dukies are on a 4-game losing streak. They were riding a 5-game winning streak before the start of the 4 losses. They started out ACC play losing their first two-games. The Devils are the only "Phat 5" program that is on the fence when talk of the "Big Dance" comes up. This will be the first time during the 8 Volume Report all season that the previous scores of played games are left out of the schools summary. The last 6 games to end the regular-season may determine if Duke will be dancing in mid-March.
