Natural Body Product Company Spreads the Spirit of Aloha with Every Handmade Order

Andrea Kane likes the “intimacy” an Internet storefront offers. She likes being able to listen to her customers – no matter where they are in the world -- and provide them with a product they want, instead of a product they walk in and pick. It is this “intimacy” that has increased her online sales.

“When you walk into a store, you get what’s on the shelf,” said Andrea Kane, creator of Marley’s Own, a natural skin care line. “Not everybody wants a scented body butter. Some people have very sensitive skin and don’t want any preservatives in their skin creams. I offer my customers a choice of what goes into the end product they’re ordering.”

Marley’s Own is a home-based business on Oahu. But there aren’t stacks of body butters and creams sitting around Kane’s house. Each product is made to order and shipped within two days to ensure freshness. If the customer doesn’t want fragrance added, the order is unscented. If the customer wants all-natural, the order is made without preservatives and has an expiration label that reads, “Made with Aloha and will last until…”

“Preservatives aren’t always necessary,” said Kane. “I have a customer who is on chemotherapy who buys creams without preservatives because she feels she has enough chemicals in her body right now. Many of my customers would rather get a smaller size container that is 100 percent natural with an expiration date, than get a larger container that has additives.”

Kane may have the right idea. According to the most recent statistics from the U.S. Market for Natural Personal Care Products, retail sales of natural/organic skincare, hair care and cosmetics reached more than $3.9 billion in 2003 and is expected to reach close to $6 billion by 2008.

“When I write that a bit of Aloha goes into each item, I mean it,” Kane said. “Each time I place the label on my product, I feel a sense of satisfaction. I just want to sit back and admire it like a work of art.”
   
Marley’s Own also sells products on eBay, sometimes at significantly lower prices.
   
“I believe that every woman should be able to afford to feel beautiful,” explains Kane. “Not everyone can afford a $75 body scrub at the spa. It’s not altruism, it’s good business. I know that each time someone spreads my product on their body, they are spreading a piece of Aloha from Marley’s Own, and the quality of my body butters and creams draws them to my website. And with each repeat order, I know it’s something good. That’s what I call customer service.”

Marley’s Own product line offers more than 18 body products, many of which contain Hawaiian Kukui nut oil, used for centuries in Hawaii to treat skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis and acne.
