Some were known to be cancer causing, while others were banned or untested. The source of these chemicals was often traced back to beauty products. Like many people, Andrea Kane, a stay-at-home mom, was concerned with this news. After losing patches of hair to a chemical hair relaxer and suffering from cysts and boils under her arms from the aluminum in deodorants, she decided to create a line of products that would be naturally better for her body. She named the line Marley’s Own, after her daughter. “I was tired of trying to figure out what ingredients were on labels,” Kane said. “Our skin is our largest organ. We’re always being told what to put in our bodies, but what about what we put on them? So, I did some research, experimented with recipes I found in a health book and tested them on my family. We loved them and quickly realized other people would as well.” Kane began selling Marley’s Own on Ebay. Response was steady and with the encouragement of family and friends and repeat customers, she decided to make it a full-time business. The product line includes Mango Mix Body Butter, Organic Face Scrub, Gardenia Gardens Bath Salts and Mango Shea Hair Crème and more. Though natural products can be expensive compared to mass-produced products, customers of Marley’s Own say the results far outweigh the cost “I had awful dry, rough feet,” said Sherry Askins, a customer in New Jersey. “I tried the body butter and was hooked. I don’t make a lot of money and wouldn’t normally spend more than three dollars on lotion, but if you had seen my feet before I used this and looked at them now, you’d find the money to buy it too.” With six products in this all-natural line, Marley’s Own has no synthetic chemicals or additives, which makes the shelf life three to six months. Customer Terry Liles says the expiration date isn’t a problem. “I use it everyday, in the morning and before I go to bed,” Liles said. “I put it on after my bath and my skin has never felt so soft. Marley’s Own has become a permanent fixture on my beauty table.” Kane hopes to add gift baskets and other products such as shampoos, conditioners and face toners to her natural line of products.
