Photofacials and various different lasers have proven to be effective in reducing sun damage, unwanted pigmentation, redness and undesirable veins. Throughout these years many new technologies and devices have come to market, most of which have not presented much improvement over previous light based technologies. Dusa pharmaceuticals has developed a substance called Levulan to be used with light based technologies in a treatment called photodynamic therapy. Photodynamic therapy is the next generation of photorejuvenation. Photodynamic therapy or P.D.T. involves the application of Levulan, a photosensitizing agent, which is activated by certain wavelengths of light and can triple the efficacy of a normal photofacial or BLU-U treatment. All the same dramatic reductions in pigmentation irregularities, and visible veins that previously required a series of 3-5 IPL treatments can be achieved in as little as one treatment. Unlike IPL treatments without Levulan, photodynamic therapy with IPL can treat many superficial pre-cancerous lesions as well as superficial skin cancers while treating pigmentation irregularities, vascularity, and uneven skin tone. Pre treating the skin with Levulan makes damaged skin cells much more sensitive to light energy. This additional sensitivity allows for the energy produced by our IPL devices to be more effective in the elimination of damaged or dangerous skin cells. The BLU-U when used in combination with Levulan can, in a single treatment, treat pre-cancerous lesions without any discomfort or downtime.
