• Terhune Orchards, Princeton, N.J.: With festivals nearly every fall weekend, pick your own apples, strawberries, pumpkins, including the best cinnamon cookies, cider doughnuts, and apple cider.
• Adirondack Museum, Blue Mountain Lake, N.Y.: Historic buildings, educational collections and magnificent gardens dot 32 sprawling acres. Leaf peepers head here to catch a glimpse of incredible fall colors and partake in harvest activities.
• Mountain State Apple Harvest Festival, Martinsburg, W.Va.: Share the heritage of the area with a celebration of the apple including an apple pie and dessert baking contest and an apple pancake breakfast.
• Ashtabula County Covered Bridge Festival, Jefferson, Ohio: Celebrates 16 bridges that are considered to be engineering wonders of their time. Take a van tour from the fairgrounds to four of the main bridges, or set out on your own self-guided tour. Enjoy the historic cars, quilt show, farmer's market, and live entertainment.
• Apple Valley Country Store, Hood River, Ore.: Apple pies, dumplings, and cider doughnuts are notable specialties at this country store, located along the Hood River Valley's scenic "Fruit Loop" drive. From April through October, there's a festival going on about once a month.
• China Bend Winery, Kettle Falls, Wash.: Celebrate fall at the bed and breakfast nestled on the property; sip on wine made from organically grown grapes; and wake up to a gourmet organic breakfast.
• The Fundy Trail, St. Martins, New Brunswick: Walk or bike through the trails, drive along the coast or take a guided tour to Sea Captains Burial Grounds while viewing the fall foliage. Explore the trails and look for wildlife, marine and plant life that can be seen in their natural habitat.
• Woodland Farm Market, Shelby, Mich.: Enjoy the owner's secret cherry pie recipe and be sure to try some of the fresh apple cider. While you're there, stock up on homemade goodies such as rolls and pickled asparagus to add to your Thanksgiving feast.
• Turkey Trot, Yellville, Ark.: This community festival, held during the second Friday and Saturday of October, is comprised of North central Arkansas' largest parade, a 5K run, a beauty pageant, turkey calling contest, and a big turkey dinner and blue grass music.
• Hull-Chelsea-Wakefield Steam Train, Gatineau, Quebec: The 100-year-old Swedish steam engine in Canada's Gatineau Hills takes riders on excursions from Gatineau to quaint Wakefield, manually turning around on an old turntable for the trip back. Enjoy the Sunset Dinner Train, with views of the river, live music and excellent food cooked onboard.
