Amazingly, the New York Subway Metrocard could never be purchased on the internet. In a historical first, nysubway.com now sells the New York Metrocard online.

In the past, the consumer has been limited to buying the New York Subway and Bus Metrocard from either New York subway stations or official retailers.

Noel Turner, president of nysubway.com says "Tourists and locals don't like being forced to buy Metrocards in the New York City Subway stations, which are not the best places in the world to be flashing money and credit cards - especially late at night."

Mr Turner has also found that the official Metrocard retailers and vendors are lacking "Bricks and mortar locations around New York City also sell the Metrocard, but the highest possible profit margin on one Metrocard is only 3.0% and the expiration dates can be short - this encourages the retailer to keep inventory extremely low, resulting in many out of stock situations". Mr Turner continues "Its quite bizarre, stores need to carry it to encourage foot traffic, but don't want to actually sell it because of the low profit margins."

Mr Turner adds "Now, anyone with internet access can purchase various denominations of the Metrocard online and have them delivered to their home or office."

Mr. Turner goes on to say "Metrocards are due to get replaced in the next couple of years, with smartcards, but until then, nysubway.com will continue to provide the consumer with online Metrocard sales" - It remains to be seen how the public takes to using their credit card as a smartcard at the subway turnstiles.
