Southampton, a great place by the sea and a great place to go if you’re over 50!!

Hands up, how many of knew that Southampton plays host to an over 50's festival every year? and as done since for more than 20 years? The festival runs between 12th and 24th of August and involves a number of excellent events such as Swimming, scuba diving, dancing, cricket, walks and tours!

But of course Southampton as a lot more to offer to all age ranges rather than just the over 50’s. It as a lively night scene with plenty of pubs and clubs as is expected for a city on the sea. It also is littered with fantastic sea food restaurants to experience. Not surprising bearing in mind this is the city that was the first to experience the delight of fish fingers back in 1955!

The first trial of fish fingers led to a competition between two different fillings herring and cod. Herring was the favourite of the two, but Cod won out by a clear majority and this led to the roll out the product later in 1955!

Southampton is now one of the top retail destinations in the south of England and it is marketing itself as an excellent venue for a Christmas weekend break. With plenty of hotels in Southampton, catering for all budgets it worth a weekend away. It is also great to stay over the night if you’re catching one of the many cruises that set off from its massive port.

Southampton is a place close to the hearts of all British folk; it has been a key port for the country throughout the years and is the birth place of the Spitfire aircraft.
